Las quemaduras constituyen un problema de salud pública a nivel mundial y provocan alrededor de 180 000 muertes al año, de las cuales la mayoría se produce en los países de ingreso bajo y mediano.
Aunque las tasas de mortalidad relacionadas con las quemaduras han disminuido gracias al avance de las tecnologías para el tratamiento de las lesiones y la ampliación de los programas educativos sobre prevención, la carga económica de las quemaduras sigue siendo alta.
