El envenenamiento por mordedura de serpiente es una enfermedad tropical desatendida que afecta entre 1,8 y 2,7 millones de personas y causa cerca de 400 000 casos de discapacidad permanente cada año.
La mordedura de una serpiente venenosa puede provocar una emergencia médica aguda como parálisis grave con el consiguiente problema respiratorio, trastornos hemorrágicos que podrían ser potencialmente mortales o una insuficiencia renal irreversible, también puede destruir, además, tejidos a nivel local.
