La hipertensión es el factor de riesgo más importante de muerte y morbilidad relacionada con enfermedades cardiovasculares en todo el mundo.
Alrededor de 1280 millones de adultos en el mundo de 30 a 79 años sufren de hipertensión y cerca de dos tercios viven en países de bajos y medianos ingresos. De estos el 46% de los adultos hipertensos desconocen que padecen esta afección.
Una de las metas mundiales para las enfermedades no transmisibles es reducir la prevalencia de la hipertensión en un 25% en 2030 (con respecto a los valores de referencia de 2010).
