La desnutrición infantil sigue siendo un problema importante de salud pública y desarrollo en los países de bajos y medianos ingresos. Afecta la salud, el desarrollo y la productividad en la edad adulta. Los niños con bajo peso tienen una variedad de anomalías cognitivas, es importante establecer una alimentación saludable en los niños mientras aún están en la escuela primaria para prevenir la desnutrición y moldear sus hábitos alimenticios cuando sean adultos.
