Los cambios fisiológicos que ocurren durante el embarazo, incluidas las alteraciones de la inmunidad, podrían aumentar la susceptibilidad a las infecciones virales. El sistema inmunológico inmaduro innato y adaptativo del feto en desarrollo los hace altamente susceptibles a infecciones con posibles consecuencias perjudiciales para el desarrollo y la función del cerebro fetal y neonatal. Las mujeres embarazadas infectadas con SARS ‐ CoV ‐ 2 son susceptibles a la neumonía, al parto prematuro antes de las semanas <37 y 34 de gestación y el riesgo de aborto espontáneo al principio del embarazo.
A diferencia de lo que se observó en el SARS y el MERS, un menor número de muertes maternas se han atribuido al COVID-19, incluso entre aquellas con enfermedad grave.
