El virus H5N1 se ha propagado de las aves silvestres a las aves domésticas y podría potencialmente infectar a los humanos causando una alta mortalidad o morbilidad. Esta propagación ha planteado una gran amenaza para la salud pública mundial. El Centro para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades CDC, recomienda el monitoreo de las personas expuestas a aves infectadas con HPAI A(H5N1) (incluidas las personas que usan el equipo de protección personal recomendado).
