Según los CDC estiman que la frecuencia de los síntomas de COVID a largo plazo oscilan entre el 5% y el 80%. La Organización Mundial de la Salud señala entre el 10% y el 20%. Estudios reportan que los coronavirus humanos, incluido el SARS-CoV-2, son neurovirulentos, neurotrópicos y neuroinvasivos lo cual hace posible que se puedan dirigir al cerebro a través de múltiples vías, contribuyendo así a secuelas neuropsiquiátricas. Otros factores dependientes de la misma persona podrían contribuir al mantenimiento de éstos síntomas.
