La diarrea es una de las causas más importantes de morbilidad y mortalidad que afectan a los niños pequeños de bajos ingresos. Pueden ser provocadas por microorganismos, tales como virus, bacterias o parásitos, la mayoría de los cuales se trasmiten por agua y/o alimentos con contaminación fecal. Estudios demuestran que las intervenciones de saneamiento reducen la diarrea entre un 15 y 26 %, tanto en niños pequeños vulnerables como en poblaciones de todas las edades.
