Las cataratas son la principal causa de ceguera en todo el mundo con la posibilidad de evitarse. Conforme va envejeciendo la población mundial, podría ir en aumento tanto en países desarrollados como en países en desarrollo. Dentro de los tratamientos efectivos se encuentra la extracción quirúrgica del cristalino y la implantación de una lente intraocular. La Organización Mundial de la Salud informa que en todo el mundo hay aproximadamente 20 millones de personas que han perdido la capacidad de ver como consecuencia esta enfermedad.
